The Artist's Way by Julia Cameron.

And here's why:

  • It is subjective, just like art:

There are a lot of varied reviews about the book. Some thrashing it, some swear by it. I found it to be a good book on exercises to follow for a meaningful and creative routine.

  • It is actionable:

There are a lot of corny stories in the book. It can get preachy. It balances that out with 12 weeks worth of actional items that stay with you.

  • It will introduce you to Morning Pages:

It is an exercise the book introduces in the first chapter itself and even though I have been hesitant, I have seen massive advantages in continuing to do so, every morning.

  • It will introduce you to Artist's Date:

I was highly sceptical about trying this as an exercise. Somewhere I imagined, I already did it and it's no help while the set of instructions in the book allows you to see it in a different light.

  • It will allow you to learn every time you come back to it:

The brilliant part about this book, I realized, is that it is as helpful the tenth time you read it as it was the first time. The exercises, if done repeatedly, still add value.

Honestly, this book has so much to take away that has potentional to change a life—and completely changed the way I think about Creativity.

It is a book on exercises to follow when the creative block hits you.
