What is your strategy as a consumer to be on social media?

The need for plan in this consumer friendly world of social media

I spend a lot of my time on Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and sporadically on Medium. I am guessing we all do.

While I switch between each app and react to the posts, I realize to myself that there is really no end goal for me here.

As creators, there are multiple trains of thoughts and strategies that go into creating these posts but as a consumer, is there a similar goal?

So lately, the questions I've been asking myself are these:

As a consumer, what is my goal to be on these mediums?

For a detailed breakdown of the questions:

  • Why am I senselessly switching and scrolling between these apps?
  • Why am I consuming the same content on different platforms?
  • What are my end goals and/or strategy for when I connect with the content?

To wrestle with these questions, a few things I am doing are:

  • The most basic thing of limiting my interaction with the apps.
  • Engaging with the content instead of just scrolling through the posts.
  • Bookmarking / Saving the posts I deem useful to myself.

The reason I started doing this is not just to track my time spent on social media but to actually consider the type of content I am actually connecting with.

The end-of-the-week exercise is to retrospectively look at these bookmarks and categorize the information in either the informative or leisure categories.

The goal of the exercise is to be more mindful of the information I consume. But I think it'll be a while before I come to any sort of solid conclusion.

Finally, I want to throw the same questions back to you and look for answers, and a wider sense of purpose from a wider audience.

So, Why do you consume the content on social media?
